Introduction

This page is about my pre-production, meaning that it will include all of my post-production work which is for preparation before I start production such as mood boards, asset lists, 2D floor plan etc.

Pre Production Plan

Asset List
Lantern
Kunai
Tanto
Katana + stand
Naginata
Tatami Mat
Shoji Door
Shoji Room Divider
Table
A seat (pillow)
Architecture

For all of the props in the list above, I would like to create in Maya, as this is a 3D modelling software that I am most confident with

2D Floor Plan

I have put together a simple 2D Floor Plan created in Adobe XD. This conveys my idea of creating an interior environment and helps show what props I want to be within this scene, and where they should be located. After placing the props in the 2D plan, I then imagined how it would look in Unreal Engine, and so I then decided what I thought maybe the most appropriate location for the camera, which was at the bottom right corner of the interior, facing slightly to the right of the top left corner, to get a good view of everything within the interior. I chose this camera angle, because I didn't want a basic view from the bottom middle for example.

After creating my floor plan, I decided to search for some references for the props I want to create such as for a table as shown to the left
As you can see, these tables are very short, as this is the type of table used in Feudal Japan
With this, I have noticed that they wont be able to use chairs, and so instead they use pillows, such as the ones I have gathered images of below

It is common in Japan to use cushions on the floor when you have dinner at a low table. The tables are around 27cm tall, and so people of all ages may sit on the floor, or more comfortably on a cushion.

These are a few images of Japanese Lanterns. I plan on having a few lanterns placed within my scene lighting the room up. From looking at these, the one that most interests me of which I believe will fit nicely in my scene is the bottom right lantern

Here I have gathered images of interiors that inspire me to create something similar to. I like the use of wood and the tatami mats, and I think that the colours fit very nicely together, since the colours are mainly different shades of browns and yellows. I believe this is something that I can make with my knowledge on the softwares I intend to use

This is a gathering of Ancient Japanese interior structures. Similar to the gathering above, in these I am more focused in looking at the architecture. I plan on creating architecture similar to this for the interior walls, floors and ceiling of my environment

This is a gathering of Katanas, of which I intend to make one to be placed in my scene.

This is a mood board that I created in Unit 07, but was never put to use due to the project being cancelled. However I will be to take this mood board and use it for inspiration for the props I will be creating

This is my complete mood board of all the reference images of the props I would like to create. Creating this has helped me get a better understanding of the props I want to create such as the different types of lanterns that I can choose which one I would like to create, which I have chosen to be the second from top left image

In regards to my Asset List with further thought, I have decided not to create all the assets I had put on there. This is because certain ones I feel aren't as necessary as some of the others and that if I were to create them then it would only be deducting my time I have to create this project.
This is what I intend on creating:
Architecture
Katana + Stand
Naginata
Table
Shoji Door
Tatami Mat
Pillow
Lantern

I feel that after considering the time I have left to create this project, I believe this is now a more realistic list on what I can achieve during this time

I plan to have the scene be based at sunset. My reason for this is because I believe that a sunset is a very nice looking background, and I plan on having the sun pierce through the open door emitting light onto the room

This is a gathering of environments with a sunset. What I like about these, is that the focal point is very obvious, which is the sun. They have very warm colour pallets which really convey the idea of a sunset environment and makes it very obvious to the viewer what the time of day is. This will help me with the lighting part of production, where I will now be using warm colours such as orange and yellow to show the time of day, which will be at sunset

Here I have gathered 3 images of Japanese lanterns. I already know the type of lantern I will be making, but I have grabbed these images specifically for the impact of light onto the environment. I really like the yellowness, and it will match the colour pallet and the lights from the sun very nicely and I believe it will mix very well in my scene with all the lighting put together

This is a quick 2D Sketch up I made in Photoshop. This represents the exact level design I am hoping to create from the cameras point of view
Creating 2D Sketch will help me further understand what the end goal of the environment should look like with the camera in place for when it comes to the production

Here I have analysed a similar environment to what mine will be. I've noticed what the focal point is, that being the light shining through the open door. This is something that I would like to create for my scene
I have also taken note of how the ceiling was made where it is slim wooden planks and I now intend to create a similar ceiling for my scene, and along with that I highlighted the modular pieces of the dark wood borders which is something I can replicate into my environment

Material Research

From the research I conducted on the architecture of Feudal Japan, I have gathered 2 reference images of different wood types that I will be using in my project

This is an up close image of a Tatami mat, which I will be creating for the floor of my environment

All 3 of the images above will help me create the right material for the specific props that need this texture. I am not able to buy any textures that resemble these specifically, but I will hopefully be able to create or find something similar to them.
